AirTree co-founder Craig Blair and wife Melanie Caffrey revealed as circa $30m Bronte buyers

The mystery buyers of a Bronte home that sold for circa $30m this month have been revealed as a venture capital big-hitter and his marketing consultant wife.

Craig Blair, the co-founder and partner of Australian venture capital outfit AirTree, and his wife Melanie Caffrey, snapped up the six-bedroom trophy home in Tipper Ave on April 4, local sources advise.

And their current home in Battery St, Clovelly is set to go on the market with the agent behind the recent record-breaking deal, James Ball of Sotheby’s.

When contacted, Ball refused to confirm the street chatter, though other sources say it’s spot-on.

Blair founded AirTree alongside Daniel Petre in 2014, with an initial $60m fund. It’s invested in a range of companies including Canva, GO1, Employment Hero and A Cloud Guru and its holdings are now valued at more than $2 billion.

Bronte house price record smashed

The Tipper Ave sale smashed the previous Bronte record of 25m, set in December 2021 when the Bronte Rd home of the late Seven chief executive Maureen Kerridge sold to Hana-Lia and Gavin Kwachuck, who own the Love to Dream child sleepwear company.

And it’s now thought that it being just under $30m, the sale has also exceeded the $29m Bondi record of $29m when James Packer’s bachelor pad sold in 2018.

Ball confirmed the most recent sale to the Wentworth Courier on April 5, but has refused to name the buyers ever since due to confidentiality agreements.

Ball said only that the result was in line with the price guide, which had been $30m.

Blair and Caffrey’s new home, on a huge 1100sqm, is one of Bronte’s largest holdings and has gun-barrel views of Bronte Beach.

Walls of glass frame wide views to the ocean and there’s a solar-heated saltwater pool, with front and rear lawns.

Marketing photos from when their current Battery St home on a 706sqm block last traded in 2013 show it too to be very stylish, with four bedrooms, five-bathrooms and a three-car garage, pool and extensive views of the ocean.
